JACK DUREN RIDES FOR POLIO
Jack joined with the Greater Albany Rotary Polio Plus ride last Saturday. Jack submitted this report of the ride.
What a beautiful day for a bike ride. At ten in the morning it was probably only around seventy degrees. I checked in at the Linn County Fairgrounds and was told to go ahead and start. I did. The ride took me north of Knox Butte Road into the countryside. I was doing well until I began to notice Buzzards circling above me. I went out Clover Ridge Road to Kamph Road and then to (Can you believe this?) Lickskillet Rd., back to Knox Butte Road and then to the fairgrounds where I began. The ride was easy with no hills to speak of, obviously great weather and a beautiful countryside to look at. The only worries were those darn Buzzards still circling above me. When I got home they were circling the house so I’m not sure if they know something I don’t or what. At any rate, the Rotary Club of Philomath membership contributed a total of $442.00 towards Polio Plus for my ride and I was able to collect a grand total of $732.00 by twisting some none-Rotarian arms. They rotated OK after that. At any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed the event and will thank the club on Tuesday.
Jack
Thanks Jack, and well done.
COUPLES IN ROTARY
I read in this month's Rotarian that the St. George club in Tasmania has nine couples among their 29 members. Our club has five couples.
When you are thinking of friends and acquaintances to invite as members, why not invite couples? Don and I have enjoyed so many good times at club meetings, district and international events. It has been good for our marriage.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Welcoming party Tuesday, Sept. 7th for our exchange student. Her name is Teresa Ducrey, she's 17, is from Switzerland, will be a junior and staying with Dave and Heidi Braly. More details next week.
It’s not too early to start thinking about attending next year’s International Convention. It will be held in New Orleans, May 21 – 25. It’s being held early to beat the June heat in New Orleans. This will be the last RI Convention in the US for 5 years. A registration discount is available until December 15. Also register for a hotel.
ATLANTA to Host 2017 Rotary International Convention
Atlanta won the right to host the 2017 Rotary International convention. The convention June 10-14, 2017 at the Georgia World Congress Center will attract more than 30,000 Rotarians from around the world, and they will occupy an estimated 41,000 hotel rooms. Their average length of stay is estimated to be 10 days, which means a big economic jolt for the city's tourism and hospitality industry.
Please join your fellow Rotarians for the annual District Conference this April 28 - May1, 2011 at the Mill Casino in Coos Bay, OR as we see, hear and are inspired by the many ways Rotarians have and still are working in their communities and around the world.

Our August 17th meeting program features Todd Stansbury, OSU Athletics. Some of us have been known to go somewhat crazy when the OSU Beavers are mentioned…stand and cheer and sing silly songs about the Beavers superiority over that nasty rival to the south. Lets make it an Oregon State orange and black day! Wear your OSU gear and make Todd feel welcome.
Vina Moses needs our help. Bring some school supplies to the next two meetings. The only items NOT needed are color crayons. Lets pitch in and help the school kids from Philomath and Corvallis who need school supplies. Vina board member Ron Thiesen will coordinate and deliver items to Vina Moses for their annual schools supply give away. THANKS!

EDITORIAL

Last week was a busy week for the club. Many of our members worked at the County Fair. We were able to get a photo of Shep, Peggy, Merv and Don.
A Night at the Knight's Game
Saturday night was the baseball game in Corvallis. Josh bought a block of 30 tickets and they all got sold to Rotarians and friends. Corvallis lost to Walla Walla but it was a good game.

Bruce, Kathy, Wendy, Karen, Merv and Carol were in the front row.
Kezzie, Josh and young Camaron were in the second row.
Someone told the announcer that it was Ken Elwer’s birthday. They flashed his name on the big screen and we sang Happy Birthday to Ken.
Wh o wants pizza? The seats that were making the most noise got the pizza. And then there were fireworks to cap off the evening.

Next week, Aug 10, is the District Governor’s official visit to our club. The DG is required to visit every club in their district. With 72 (I think) clubs to visit, that makes for a very busy first six months.
Our DG, Claire Little will meet with our Board of Directors at 7:30 Monday evening at the Benton County Museum, 2nd floor area.
At our noon Tuesday meeting, DG Claire is the program. All members should make a very special effort to attend this meeting.

As a reminder, we have purchased a block of 30 tickets to the August 7th Corvallis Knights game. Rotarians, their friends and family, are all encouraged to join us. You can purchase tickets for $10 each by contacting Josh Kvidt.

Dan Forbess is our newest member in Philomath Rotary. Dan is the new Philomath Schools Superintendent.

One of the thrills at a convention is meeting your hero. Don attended a breakout session that was moderated by RIPP Cliff Dochterman. After the session, Don imposed on Cliff for a picture. |

Philomath Rotary Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary
We will be celebrating our club's anniversary during our luncheon meeting on Tuesday, February 27th. As we will have a full schedule for this event, we will begin serving lunch at 11:30 and begin the meeting at 11:45. Realizing that folks may not be able to get there that early, we want to emphasize that walking in at any time is perfectly acceptable and we expect to have plenty of food.
The program is expected to include attendance by some of our charter members, giving us some background and memories of past times. We will also be inviting charter members who are no longer active or in the area as well as other VIP guests.
We hope you can join us for this special celebration! |
