Will my child be ready to enter the public school system or another private school upon graduating from Berkeley?

Yes. Berkeley School uses California State Adopted Texts. This means that students at Berkeley use learning material approved by the State of California for age-appropriate content. Beginning in the 2nd grade, Berkeley School students take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, a national standardized test. Over the last 10 years, our students have averaged in the 95th percentile for their grade levels. Generally, students are working at two levels above the norm. Is Berkeley on a year-round schedule?

Yes. We've found that spreading out the three-month vacation over the year results in better skill retention. The Berkeley School year starts at the beginning of August and continues through the end of June. The school is fully closed the month of July. During the month of November, and one month in spring (mid-March to mid-April) Berkeley offers an intersession plan, outlined below. You can also see Berkeley's School Calendar and Daily Schedule.

Are there programs available during the vacation months?

Yes. During November and the spring intersession months, Berkeley School offers themed intersessions (similar to a summer camp). A recent intersession program featured a "Medieval Times" theme. The children learned about medieval European culture. Some of the activities included production of illuminated manuscripts, building a castle and hearing stories about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The intersessions are offered at an additional cost. The school is closed in July, with no intersession program.

When can my child enroll?

We have open enrollment at Berkeley School. Our Developmental Kindergarten students must be at least 4 years and 9 months old. Because our instruction is individualized, new students can start any time during the school year.
